LETTERS FOR BRIAN

FADE IN

INSIDE - HOSPITAL – OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT’S CORRIDOR – IN THE MORNING

CLARA (V. O.) – INTERCUT

Brian always said that life is a big show, so what is death? It’s this big show’s lights fading, or maybe the beginning of a new cycle, where what was possible to learn until its arrival is useless, truly obsolete.
I don’t know...
I have to believe in the existence of a new cycle, an easier life, without uncertainties and obligations, with more spontaneity and joy, but up to this moment, I’m unable to do it.
Where Brian could caught sight of a show, I caught sight of the ignorance of a routine and silly life, of unscrupulous moments that alternated themselves with the most pure stupidity, and where he could see the greatness, though I was trying hard to have this sight too, I only could see the mediocrity and the meanness of a sick world. More... in many times of my life, I tried to see the world through Brian’s eyes, maybe in attempt to become my existence more bearable, transforming it in something worthy of believing.
Through the years, I learned that you have to be disposed to give more than you receive, from the world and the people, and in this reciprocal relationship, between giving and receiving, the only one that could balance the scales was him....
It was not that he used to give more than he received, but he never offered me less than I gave him, and this.... for a long time, became very important to me....
He became important to me.

HOSPITAL CORRIDOR
General take of an outpatient department corridor, nurses passing by camera, doctors talking, camera finds a nurse that carries an instrument to measure blood pressure, thermometer and serum bags (all in a metal tray) and the camera follows her through the corridor; she meets other nurses and they joke to each other, and then she walks through a long corridor and in its end she enters in a room.

BEDROOM
She enters, opens the bedroom’s windows, allowing the morning sunshine to come in, lighting up all the room; she goes to the patient and affectionately removes the hair that was in the lad’s face, so she executes the blood pressure measure procedures, temperature, exchanges the serum bag, singing a song; when she finishes the procedures she looks to the nightstand and finds the patient’s correspondence, she handles the letters, and finds one that attracts her attention, and then she jokes to the patient.

NURSE
Look what I have here, Brian, it’s another letter for you, from that friend of yours, what is really her name?
She waits for a reaction of the lad, but he stands still.

NURSE
Do you want me to read it for you?
PAUSE.
Ah, I think you... really want it... right, darling?

So the nurse pulls a chair, puts it beside Brian’s bed, however, there’s a lot of shadow, and so she turns the chair (changes its position) and then she starts to read the letter.

NURSE
Hi, little strawberry, are you better? I hope so... Today, I don’t know why, I remembered the way you got this nickname. Do you remember? Oh, what nonsense, of course you don’t! You were pretty red, when I saw you the first time, and there was your mother coming with you on her lap, full of proud...

CUT FOR

OUTSIDE - CLARA’S HOUSE – SIDEWALK – IN THE PAST
Woman (Clara’s mother – Helen) is sat on the steps at the entrance of her house, drinking and observing the approaching of another woman (Brian’s mother – Rose) with a child on her lap; Rose approaches and sits beside Helen, gives her a smile and together they observe a little girl (Clara as a child) playing on a swing, improvised with a tire.

ROSE
Hi Helen, are you alone? Is he at home?
HELEN
No, he already left...

ROSE
And is this the reason for your sadness?

HELEN
No... Of course not, I think it must be because I know he will come back... (KIDDING)

POV HELEN

INSERT – On the back yard Clara plays with a wire, that she found when she was sat on a sand pile.

THE SCENE COMES BACK

HELEN
I think that....Clara, be careful with this wire, girl, it may hurt you!

ROSE
And you still joke with this situation...

HELEN
What situation, Rose?

Rose becomes reserved.
ROSE
Nothing, my angel...

HELEN
Come here Clara...come to see Aunt Rose’s baby, look how pretty he is...

INSERT – Clara playing on the sand pile and the women in the background, and she hurts her hand with the wire.

POV HELEN

Clara runs towards her mother.

THE SCENE COMES BACK

HELEN
Didn’t I tell you?

Helen holds the girl, that sketches a crying face, but suddenly, she stares at the baby in Rose’s arms, and gives a grin.

CLARA
What’s his name?

ROSE
Brian, his name’s Brian, just like his grandfather...
Clara makes caress on his head, on his eyes with her fingers, and then on his mouth, and then she notices that his skin is sun burnt, by the afternoon rays.

CLARA
He is so ruddy, aunt... I think I’ll call him strawberry... my little strawberry.

Clara runs to her house, and Helen stands up holding the bottle.

HELEN
I got to come in, I’ll treat Clara’s injury... You look better!

ROSE
Yeah... The more difficult has passed, now it is just to remove the stitches...Listen, angel, if you need Paul, he’s at home, in case of he become violent again...

HELEN
He’s a good man, Rose, he’s only having problems, we all have problems...(FOR A MOMENT SEEMINGLY SHE’LL OPEN HER HEART). Don’t worry, we will overcome it.

ROSE
Helen, sometimes I don’t know if what you feel about him is really love, or just the fear of leave him and face life, or who knows?...Maybe the fear of his reaction...fear of his intent to kill you if you say you’re leaving.

Helen looks down and starts a silent, sorrowful and ashamed weep.

POV CLARA
INSERT – From inside the house Clara hears the two-women talk.

CLARA ( V. O.) - IN THE PRESENT
On that evening, I understood how unhappy my mother was. Of course I couldn’t understand the size of the feeling, but through the time, I was being able to understand how she felt, the emptiness that she felt; it was there, little strawberry, on that moment, that I began to grow up...

THE SCENE COMES BACK

ROSE
Okay, darling...when you become ready.

Helen kisses the child on her friend’s lap, smiles and dries the tears, says goodbye to her friend comes in and closes the door.

CUT FOR

INSIDE THE HOSPITAL – SNACK BAR – EARLY MORNING
In an empty snack bar, on early morning, a lady sat at a table drinks coffee made in a coffee machine, the snack bar’s door opens and a lad comes in and walks towards the lady, pulls a chair and sits beside the lady.

CLARA ( V. O. )
I always respected your mother...In spite of all, she always was strong...for a time I thought I could be like her... what nonsense, nobody can be like your mother...

LAD
How’s our Brian today?

The lady stares the lad with a visible and incalculable pain, drinks a gulp of coffee, as if she could find some console with this act.

ROSE
He’s in the same situation, my darling, my hope is fading away, just as my strengths...

The lad puts one hand on the lady’s shoulder, and holds her hand, trying to make her recover her confidence.

PAUSE

LAD
You can’t give up, he’ll recuperate, you’ll see...

ROSE
I hope God to be hearing you...

So the lad takes a deep breath, and his features change, and Rose notices that he got something to tell her...

ROSE
Your heart is so tight, son, I can feel it... You can tell me what you wanna tell, don’t suffer anymore and please, don’t put my sensibility in doubt...

LAD
It may not be the right moment, but I need to tell you: the institution can’t maintain Brian anymore here in the hospital, we’re without money, passing through serious financial difficulties and the costs of the hospital are very high, maybe we won’t have the money to pay either this month...I think you had better consider other options...

The lady hugs the lad, as if she’s forgiving him because he’s the news’ bearer.

ROSE
You’ve done much for us, I can only be grateful for the things you’ve done for Brian and for me, up to now.

The lady stands up and goes out from the snack bar, the lad stays alone, and, revolted, he stands up and throws the coffee away in the garbage.

FADE IN

INSIDE CLARA’S APARTMENT – IN THE MORNING

Clara arrives home from shopping, with bags, and goes to the kitchen, takes her shoes off and lets it in the corridor, puts the pack on the balcony and takes out the cat’s food from the pack; opens the can and spills its contents in a bowl; she walks to the window and puts the bowl on the fire escape; she goes to the bedroom and takes her clothes off, putting a dressing gown; she comes back to the kitchen and takes out of the pack a smaller pack, unwraps it and puts a croissant apart of the rest of the bread; she sits down on a chair, with one of her feet on the chair and the other on the ground, she looks through the window and then looks away to an edgeways table, where there’s a picture of her mother; she looks down, looks through the window again and decides to bite the croissant, but, before, someone knocks at the door and, frustrated by have to postpone the bite, she stands up and opens the door, and she sees a man (her friend LUCK), who gaves her a smile.

LUCK
Hi, princess, did I arrive early?

CLARA
A little... I was in the middle of my breakfast...

LUCK
Today I’ll pay my rental, and talking about this, do you have my money?

CLARA
Of course... you know how much I need you. Do you want to share a croissant?

LUCK
Not today, I’m late, I’m going to my other job...

CLARA
Do you still go there!?

LUCK
What can I do? I need the money...
CLARA
There are things I can’t do for any money in the world, big guy.
LUCK
Caze’s mother is clean.

CLARA
I know you have stomach for it. Sit down, I’ll bring your money.

So Clara leaves Luck in the kitchen and she goes to the bedroom.

CLARA (V.O.) – INTERCUT
On my business line everybody is my friend, but the precaution is very important, you know how it is...the world teaches you to trust nobody...only to trust in yourself.

BEDROOM

In the bedroom she locks the door, opens the window, goes out, and passing through the fire escape, goes to the bathroom passing by Luck’s back without he catch sight of her, and she sees him meddling with her food pack; she comes in through the bathroom’s window, opens the flushing box and removes a parcel, with a plastic wrapper, and unrolling the parcel she withdraws US$200.00, puts the money in her bra, carefully she folds up the money left out, redoes the parcel and puts it into the flushing box again; she goes back carefully to not be seen by Luck, comes back to her bedroom, opens the door and goes out.

CLARA
Here is your bulky payment, “two-hundred box”, as all weeks. Open your eyes and don’t spend it all in only one place...
LUCK
Very funny... you’re going to travel this week, to see the fag.

CLARA (V. O) – INTERCUT
This fag would be you!

CLARA
If you were not so big, I would show you the fag... Don’t talk this way, he’s my friend.

LUCK
And what am I? Your bodyguard...

CLARA
You are my guardian angel...

Clara approaches to Luck and hardly, because of Luck’s height, gives him a kiss on his face.

LUCK
I’m going...see you at night... take some rest...

CLARA
I’ll try...I’ll be there by 9:00, ok?

Luck goes out, and she closes the door, she stays at the door looking through the peep-hole as Luck is going down and so she walks towards the table where she intends to eat her croissant, but before, she passes by the little table where her mother’s picture is, so she brings it near and passes her fingers on the photography; she picks it up and walks to the table, sits on the chair with a foot on it, and the other foot on the ground.

CLARA (V.O)
Today, if she were alive, she would be 68, all birthdays this memory comes back; he always had this ability, of shouldering others’ lives, my stepfather, do you remember him, little strawberry, the devil?....

CUT FOR

OUTSIDE CLARA’S HOUSE – SIDEWALK – PAST – IN THE EVENING

Two men (Paul, Rose’s husband and Robert, Clara’s stepfather) are talking, sat on the stairs, in front of the house.

ROBERT
As I told you before Paul, the black people have to go to other schools; it’s not because that little blackness thinks she can do anything that we’ll have to accept this...

PAUL
I agree with you. Their culture, their values are all different of ours...

ROBERT
And if Clara meets a creole man, what do I do? She’s already in time to have dates...

PAUL
Today is Helen’s birthday. Did you buy her something special?
ROBERT
No, my attendance is enough; later I give her a special treatment, you know what I’m talking about...

Clara arrives from school by car with some friends, and she passes between the two men that are talking, and Robert and Paul keep staring at Clara’s movements, they stare her breasts and legs; she innocently smiles to both men and she comes into her house.

PAUL
If you don’t take offense at it, I can lend you some money and so you can buy a gift; some shops in the centre must still be open.

ROBERT
It would be a great goodwilling of yours, Paul, very great!

PAUL
Forget it, neighbour, when you see you’re able to do it, you pay it back!

Paul withdraws some money from the pocket and gives it to Robert, hugs him and leaves. Robert walks into his house.

INSIDE CLARA’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM / KITCHEN / BEDROOM – PAST

Robert enters in the living room, searchs for Helen and Clara at the kitchen, but there’s no one there. He goes up the staircase, and continues the search; walking towards his bedroom he observes that the door of Clara’s bedroom is half-open, he approaches and silent, observes Clara undressing.

POV ROBERT
Clara is dancing, she takes her blouse off, and she is wearing bra, she takes her skirt off, wearing only panties, then she takes her shoes off...

THE SCENE COMES BACK

HELEN (V.O)
Robert, were you calling me?

Robert quickly goes to his bedroom, and meets Helen in the middle of the way, she tries to embrace him but he gets away from her, looking for his hat, and he takes the newspaper, in the page in which are the horses bets.

HELEN
Are you going out, Robert? Where are you going?

ROBERT
I’m going in town, I have some things to do there...

HELEN
What things?

ROBERT
It isn’t your business, woman... I’ll be back at night.

POV CLARA

Clara sees Robert going out, he stands in front of her, gives her a blink and a smile, going down the staircase.

CUT FOR

INSIDE CLARA’S HOUSE – PAST – AT NIGHT

CLARA (V.O)
He said he was coming back, and he really came back.

Discussion between Robert and Helen: Robert, drunk, tries to seize Helen, that gets away from him.

ROBERT
Come here, I wanna give your gift...

HELEN
You’re drunk..leave me alone... your repugnant!

ROBERT
I’m not repugnant, sweetheart... come on, come on...

Helen keeps on getting away from his hands, and Robert becomes revolted and starts to break all things around him, so he pursuits her along the house when he finally gets her, beats her, and Helen, in attempt to escape, stumbles in a wood bench and falls down the stairs, rolling the steps, and she has the neck broken, and dies at that same time. Paul and Rose come in and see Helen’s body on the ground, and Robert, scared, coming down the staircase.
ROBERT
You saw what happened, I didn’t do anything...she fell.

PAUL
What a hell you did, man?

INSIDE THE HOSPITAL – PAST – LATER

Rose embraces Clara, who’s crying; Robert talks to policemen, with Paul; Robert says goodbye to the cops and Paul leads they to another place, Robert rests on a wall and observes Clara (embraced by Rose) with desire, and smiles, then he goes towards her.

ROBERT
Let’s go home Clara, tomorrow I’ll come back to take care of your mother’s funeral. Now, my angel, it’s only you and me.

Rose observes Robert embracing Clara and leading her through the corridor.

CUT FOR

INSIDE CLARA’S APARTMENT – KITCHEN – PRESENT

Clara is sat on the chair; she holds her mother’s portrait against the chest and looks through the window, seeing a rainy morning coming, letting evident an obvious and deep sadness.

CLARA (V.O) – INTERCUT
That’s it, little strawberry. Sat on that hospital bench, I couldn’t know what kind of life I would have, but I felt...from that moment on my life was changed, for ever...

MATCH CUT

INSIDE THE HOSPITAL – BRIAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT

Rose is sat on a chair near Brian’s bed, and she observes the same rainy morning that Clara observed on the previous scene; she suddenly stands up and by stealth goes to the head-stand, opening the drawer, and she puts Brian’s shirts in order, and meddling with things she finds the letters from Clara; she gets upset, goes out from the bedroom and meets the nurses.

ROSE
Hey, you (POINTING TO THE NURSE) what is this? I already told you I didn’t want my son receiving these letters; who is the responsible for this?(YELLING)

The doctor responsible for Brian arrives round her back, without her taking notice of it.

DOCTOR
I ... am the responsible about this matter, (CATCHING THE LETTERS FROM HER HAND) and you should keep your temper.

ROSE
Who gave you this consent, or you doctor don’t have need of it? Are you omnipotent?

DOCTOR
Please understand... I don’t have to explain nothing to you, mainly in which refers to behaviour, but I got Josh’s authorization, and it’s enough for me; in my point of view it’s good to your son to know that he is important to people, it doesn’t matter to whom he is important, his contact with the world is essential; as bigger the number of stimulus to which he is exposed, bigger are the chances to Brian wake up...even if, physically talking, it can be unlikely; so, can you understand it now? Or will you keep your intolerance, that is simply groundless?

For a moment Rose tries to find an argument that could helps her on showing signs of her feelings to the doctor, but she gives up; it’s very complicated to explain.

DOCTOR
Please excuse me, but I’m in the middle of a visit...

The doctor enters in an elevator leaving Rose in the corridor, and discreetly, the nurses laughs at her; annoiying and ashamed, she comes back to Brian’s bedroom.

BEDROOM

Annoying, she sits beside her son , holding his hand, and rests it on her lap, stares at him, as if she is trying to explain why she doesn’t want him to know about Clara.

ROSE
It’s not that I don’t respect you, your manners, or the life you chose... my son. But she always harmed you...and you never were able to understand it, you both will never be in a same plan, in a same level, in any context.

A lad comes in through the door, walks to Rose and puts his hands on her shoulders, and his head on hers, and she hugs him.

ROSE
I’ve just had a discussion out there, about you...
JOSH
Yes, I know...

ROSE
Do you understand what I think and feel about this girl, don’t you?

JOSH
I think I don’t, but, does it really matter?

ROSE
She always has been harmful to my son...She always hurt him, directly or indirectly...

JOSH
You must give me a good explanation about it, if you want to convince me...

ROSE
When her mother died, she began to attend my house more regularly, nearly as she was living there; my husband didn’t mind with it, he was accostumed with her presence in our house, much more because of Brian than because of her need of it...

JOSH
I know this...but, how could she hurt Brian, what was this negative influence that she exerts to him... that you say it’s so harmful?...I don’t like the way this talk is leading us, Rose. Uncompromise is synonym of stupidity...

CUT FOR

OUTSIDE CLARA’S HOUSE – ON THE STREET – PAST

ROSE (V.O)
I’d rather he had never met her, perhaps it wouldn’t happen; perhaps he wouldn’t be the way he is, his fascination about her would never have existed...

POV BRIAN

He looks for Clara and Robert, that are discussing very loudly, he goes up the staircase and hears part of the discussion.

CLARA (V.O)
I told you this is over, Bob, take away your hands of me...

ROBERT (V.O)
You are mine, like your mother was...

CLARA (V.O)
If you give one more step, I kill you...

ROBERT ( V.O)
But I have money, look here...

Brian arrives at the bedroom’s door and sees when Robert is ill-treating Clara, and he (Robert) takes the knife from Clara and starts to spank her, he pulls her clothes up, and drags her to his bedroom, Brian tries to reach him but, unsuccessful, he runs to Robert’s bedroom, where he started to rape Clara, Brian comes to the bedroom and tries to take off Robert from over Clara, and Robert pushes Brian, that falls on the ground...

ROSE
Everyday I wonder whether he didn’t had fight for her, would my son stay here....in the way he is?

JOSH
And if the tumour had been diagnosed on time, if I were Christian, would your son be in this place!?, oh please, stop torturing yourself, stop searching for culprits, Rose; I know it’s not easy, sometimes I look at his work and I feel the sadness coming, the void is almost unbearable, and then I come here and I pretend he’s sleeping... and I liked to see him sleeping; woman, you’re strong, I know you are.

ROSE
Well, you’re already here, I don’t have need to stay here anymore...

FADE OUT

FADE IN

INSIDE THE HOSPITAL – BRIAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT

Josh writes a letter trying to copy Brian’s handwriting, unsuccessfully, he smiles, and suddenly he stops to write and looks at Brian, for a while he thinks he saw Brian’s hand moving; scared, he stands up and holds Brian’s hand, but he sees it was an illusion, so he takes Brian’s hand to his face and closes his eyes.

MATCH CUT

INSIDE BRIAN’S AND JOSH’S APARTMENT – BEDROOM – PAST

The bedroom is dimly ligthed, Brian and Josh are almost nude, Brian makes a caress on Josh’s chest, he softly passes his hand on his chest; Josh makes caress on Brian touching his lips with the fingers, he bends his head over and kisses Josh; they hug each other and the camera opens; Josh makes a caress on Brian’s back and they both bend over the bed and they have sex...

JOSH (V.O) – INTERCUT
I miss your touch so much...your hands upon me, searching my body, as if they were searching for an anchor, in a world of ecstasy, that was ours in that moment. You were my only reason to live, the best of all was your smile on the next morning, when you woke up...

CUT FOR

INSIDE BRIAN’S AND JOSH’S APARTMENT – BEDROOM – PAST

The same bedroom of the previous scene, now lighted by the sun rays of a fine morning; Brian comes into the bedroom with a breakfast tray and puts it down on bed, he tries to wake Josh, that is hidden beneath the pillow and so he removes Josh’s pillow and kisses him.

BRIAN
Wake up, my sweet sleeper, now it’s time to give me a grin because today is a fine day and because I made coffee for you.

Josh gets up very lazy and picks up the coffe cup.

JOSH
Good heavens!...today you were capricious with this coffee, ahn; hey, look at the clock, did you already take your medicine?

Brian smiles.

JOSH
Of course not; you not even had it in mind, have you?

BRIAN
Don’t bore me...

Josh opens the drawer of the nightstand and withdraws the medicines and gives it to Brian, that takes it with annoyance; they sit down and take their breakfast together; Brian puts the correspondence on the tray and Josh starts to read it.

JOSH
Oh, my God, look at this: it’s the invitation to Beth’s wedding!

BRIAN
I’m not going to that bore’s wedding... she’s a nuisance...

JOSH
What a pity... she likes a lot of your work...

BRIAN
Jay Leno likes it a lot too and it’s not because of it that I like him or I’m going to his show...

JOSH
My God, it’s so american to speak ill of Jay... but I like his head of hair...

BRIAN
What a bad taste... in that case I prefer Homer...

JOSH
What an exaggeration! Oh, speaking of bores, letter from Clara...

Brian smiles, as if he were a child, pulls out the letter from Josh’s hands and runs out towards the living room.

LIVING ROOM

Brian jumps over the sofa and falls sat, rips the envelope and starts to read the letter, Josh arrives at the living room with the cup of coffee and gives it to Brian, that takes the cup and gives Josh a smile.

BRIAN
Please don’t become jealous of her, but I really care about that girl...

JOSH
I would become jealous...if she were a guy...

BRIAN
Things change, your foolish...

JOSH
Okay...

Josh kisses Brian’s head, and leaves the living room, going to the bedroom.

BEDROOM

Josh lies down on bed upon Brian’s pillow, closing his eyes; the camera closes on his face and gets dark slowly.

MATCH CUT

INSIDE BRIAN’S HOSPITAL – BRIAN’S BEDROOM – PRESENT

Dark screen brights up slowly, close-up on Josh’s face with his eyes shut, remembering of the facts experienced in the previous scene; suddenly he opens his eyes, goes to the window, walks along the room; moved, he approaches to Brian and smells his hair, passes his hand on Brian’s lips, and lies down beside him, embracing him strongly, as if he’s trying to hold him on, not allowing him to leave, and he falls asleep; camera gets dark slowly.

PAUSE – the story pauses about two hours.

Brian’s doctor comes into the room, sees Josh lying down beside Brian and, a little shy, he smiles and wakes Josh up.

DOCTOR
I’ll pretend I didn’t see it...

JOSH
Doctor, it’s because I miss him so much!...

DOCTOR
I know, and that’s why I won’t tell you how much this is against the rules of the hospital, without mentioning I was born in the South...

Josh recovers himself and gets up.

JOSH
For the love of God...

DOCTOR
Forget it! Now that you awoke, and I have nothing more to do, I’ll pay you a terrible coffee made in a coffee-machine, what do you think?

JOSH
Aren’t you frightened? Yeah, because people will see us drinking coffee together...

DOCTOR
I’m not in Dakota...and besides, it’s early morning and the snack bar is empty.

Josh covers Brian and they both go out from the bedroom, walk along the empty corridor, and they arrive at the snack bar.

SNACK BAR

The doctor buys two cups of coffee and they sit down at a table.

DOCTOR
Josh, we got a problem, the institution that helps you with Brian didn’t pay the expenses of this month.

JOSH
I and Rose already know about it...

DOCTOR
That’s it, the whole thing is becoming difficult because we are being auditted, what complicates the whole situation...

JOSH
And how exactly ‘the situation becomes complicated’?

DOCTOR
I’m under pressure; they want me to sign his transfer to a public hospital because his health insurance expired.

JOSH
How can you be under pressure, if we have been paying the expenses all this time?

DOCTOR
I know, and the direction of the hospital knows it too, but the court blocks any action against the rules; my hands are tied, the only thing I can do is to postpone it, give you a couple of weeks...

JOSH
I’ll try to cover this costs, I only ask you to forget about Rose, she’s already suffering a lot...

DOCTOR
I wanted to do more for you, although you always have the possibility of taking Brian home...

JOSH
What do you mean? He will recover himself here...at least, here he has a chance.

DOCTOR
Josh, don’t think that I don’t understand your pain and Rose’s as his mother, but his clinical situation is complex; he’s in a coma for almost twelve months, I want the situation to be reversible, but considering I’m his doctor more than I’m his friend...you should better inquire about other options.

JOSH
Don’t make me face the fact that I’ll loose him, doctor; take him home is the same of sign his death...

DOCTOR
I have a different point of view about it; it’s possible that at home he could be more stimulated... and stimulus is indispensable.

JOSH
Please don’t make the best decision in your point of view to fit in your conscience.

PAUSE

DOCTOR
There’s nothing more I can tell you, I wanted to be more helpful...and please believe: in any moment I’m trying to find an excuse to send you away...things are not like this... I’ll give you more two weeks, okay?

JOSH
You can tell that “distinguished men”... they will receive their money...I swear.

The doctor stands up and lightly beats his hand on Josh’s back, and the doctor goes out from the snack bar; Josh leans on the table and rest his head on his hand, drinks a gulp of coffee and leaves the remainder on the table, stands up and leaves the snack bar.

CLARA
Hello...

MAN (V.O)
Hi, this is me...

CLARA

MAN (V.O)
I’m very busy today...but I wanna see at night...

CLARA
I’m never busy for you, don’t you already know this?

MAN (V.O)
What else can I expect from you?...my girl!?

CLARA
I like to see you, to be with you...

MAN (V.O)
I really wanted to believe that...

CLARA
You choose, your belief comes from your feeling, there’s nothing I can do...as regards to it.

MAN (V.O)
Okay, at Snoppy, at 9:00, okay?

CLARA
I’ll be there as always...

Clara hangs up the phone and smiling, hugs a female cat that was on her feet; she starts to dance in the living room with the cat on her lap, and singing, very happy; and so she goes running to the bedroom...

BEDROOM
She puts the cat on the bed and she leaps to the other side where’s the wardrobe, she opens it and starts to try on some dresses and show they to the cat, happy; all of a sudden, she sits down on the bed, and, with a sad glance, she takes a writing paper and she leans back on the head of the bed and begins to write a letter for Brian.

MATCH CUT

CLARA (V.O)
Hi, little strawberry, this is me again; he called me today, that guy about whom you was always saying: “this guy likes you”; that’s it, I’ll see him tonight, isn’t it great? Did I already tell you about when we met? Probably I did, but I’ll tell you again, because you can’t do nothing beyond hear it again, so...okay, I know it’s boring, but I need to listen to this history now and again, so I’ll be able to believe this...

INSIDE SNOPPY NIGHTCLUB – BALCONY – PAST

Clara and other women are sat at the bar’s balcony, talking to the barman, and all they are joking to each other (ON THE BACKGROUND) when a man comes in (THAT MAN THAT WAS TALKING TO CLARA AT PHONE IN THE PREVIOUS SCENE). He’s well-dressed, with two men keeping his company, he walks along the nightclub passing by the women’s back, and by Clara’s back too, but he turns and stops behind Clara, asks permission to another woman, sits down beside Clara and gives her a grin, a deep and sincere grin.

MAN
You have beautiful eyes.

CLARA
Thank you, but you’re not the first to say this...and besides, this is a very worn talk, not much original...

MAN
This is really a worn talk ...I must admit.

CLARA
Don’t be modest, I’m sure you can make it better...

MAN
I didn’t had the pretention to be modest, but I’m always concerned about never being ...pretentious, that’s the reason for the excuse, it has nothing to do with me.

CLARA
What has nothing to do with you, my eyes? (LAUGHTERS)

MAN
Your eyes, I have no doubts, I’m sure they have all to do with me, since the first moment I saw them, so, it could only be the excuses.

CLARA
May I ask you something?

The man asks for a drink.

MAN
Of course. What do you want to know?

CLARA
What does it all have to do with win somebody over, the only thing you have to do is pay...
The man drinks a gulp of the drink, looks at Clara and answers her:

MAN
And where’s the charm of the first contact? After all, I ask you to share a bed with me, to give me your body, to be with me...a stranger; if there’s no understanding, from what feeling comes the pleasure... your pleasure?

Clara looks at the man, as if she isn’t believing in what she’s hearing; for a moment there’s hesitation, but then she recovers herself.

CLARA
From your pocket...

PAUSE

You should have pleasure, since you’re paying for it...and looking at you I’m sure you can pay for it...come with me...

MAN
Won’t you say what’s your price?

CLARA
Don’t worry, you can pay it...

MAN

CLARA
It’s because to joke with someone’s feelings in my business is very painful... and a risk.

MAN
I know...someday I’ll be back, and then you tell me...now I got to go.

CLARA
Did you like me?

MAN
In which is possible to my liking, you’ve done more than you can imagine, but I have some rules...

CLARA

The funny is that after all these years, you’ve never asked me why I’m like this; if you want to know about it someday, I can tell you, you’re worthy of it; but maybe you just respect me, or maybe you respect the fact that I never asked you why you’re the way you are; it’s because this is not important to me, I think it could be important to common people, do you know that people that are majority in society? But I don’t want you to think it’s incapacity or weakness, okay?...This would hurt me...but I think you understand me...

POV ROSE

Brian talks to his mates, Clara approaches, takes Brian from his friends and gives him a kiss, hugs him with affection, giving him a pack, a gift; she gives Rose a smile and moves away.

ROSE (V.O)
I don’t know why she always needs to be near, and in all the moments in which we were together, she was always interfering, always attracting everyone’s attention...

THE SCENE COMES BACK

Brian approaches to his parents and he notices his mother is annoying.

BRIAN
Why are you so annoying, mom?

ROSE
This girl... what does she want here?

PAUL
She’s happy for Brian...

ROSE
And you’re always defending her, I wonder if you’re forgetting that she has nothing to do with our family...

PAUL
Why are you so rough with her? You don’t seem anymore that woman I married...

Brian moves away to talk to Clara and other girls.

ROSE
Yeah, maybe you’d prefer if I were like Helen...

PAUL
What has Helen to do with our talk?

ROSE
You know it very well. Now the question is : do you want me to say?

PAUL
You’re inventing things, wanting to excuse an umbalanced behaviour...

ROSE
I’m not...Okay, Paul, to betray me with Helen during my pregnance I could accept, with an effort, but sleep with Clara was...

PAUL
What are you talking about, woman, are you crazy?

ROSE
No, I’m not crazy. In the truth I’m talking about you leave this house today, while your son still respects you.

PAUL
Are you blackmailing me?

ROSE
No, I’m only doing what I must have done in the day I saw you paying to sleep with that girl, in our own house...

Paul nods and moves on, leaving Rose alone, Brian sees his father going away and he asks permission to the girls, going to meet his mother...

BRIAN
Why is dad leaving?

ROSE
Your father got a headache, he felt indisposed because of the sun. Oh, my son, you’re so handsome. At what time are you leaving tomorrow?

BRIAN
I don’t know. Clara bought the tickets. Do you want me to ask?

ROSE
No, forget it. But I didn’t knew you were going to travel together...

BRIAN
It’s a new town, mom. I’ll need some friends with me. Clara is going to study photography and we can share an apartment.

ROSE
Okay, my angel, do what is better. Now you had better look for your father, I think he forgot where he parked the car, as always.

BRIAN
I’ll talk to Clara to arrange our travel.

ROSE
I’ll take her to the car dear, I’m worry about your father...

Brian agrees with his head , hugs his mother and leaves to look for his father. Rose waits Brian to be far and she goes towards Clara.

ROSE
Oh! Look who’s here! How are you, girl?

CLARA
I’m fine, aunt Rose, did you see how handsome he was?...

ROSE
He told me you’re going to Boston with him, is it true?

CLARA
Yeah, it is... I became scared...he’ll be alone there...and I really need to move from this place... There’s a lot of bad and sad memories here, you understand, don’t you?

ROSE
Clara... I think you are not understanding very well...

CLARA
What, aunt Rose? I really don’t understand...

ROSE
You’ll make things difficult... Brian will begin a new life in Boston, dear, and soon he’ll be a great lawyer, he’ll meet a beautiful girl and get married, have children, a family; unless you’re thinking you are this girl, I can’t see any reason to you go with him.

CLARA
Oh, aunt Rose, I love Brian very much, for a long time, I don’t want to confuse his life... he just has me as a friend, an older sister...maybe there he’ll be able to see me as more than a friend...

ROSE
Even if he could look at you as a woman to marry, I ask you: would you have this courage?
CLARA
Why are you making this question? Of course I would...

ROSE
Listen, girl...Robert slept with you, half of the men in this town slept with you, even Paul slept with you, not because you loved him, or because you desired him, but you made it for money...and now, what do you say? If Brian reach this news, do you think he would look at you again?

CLARA
I think he wouldn’t...

ROSE
So, stay away from him, let him go alone to Boston and go away from this town, let him try to ascend his life and forget he met people like you, your...girl.

CLARA
I never could understand...what I did to you, to make you hate me so much. Now I understood...all things are clear...

ROSE
You can deceive everybody, with your beautiful eyes, but I can see what’s behind them...

CLARA
I’m not going with Brian, but please, don’t tell him nothing about me, I implore you...

ROSE
Stay away from my son, he’ll never know from my mouth who you are or what you can do, but I’ll tell you something, an advice, if you want to consider it: don’t have expectations in this place, the kind of secret you’re trying to hide is impossible to hide for a long time... leave, go away from this place...

Clara, sad and very moved, leaves Rose alone; Rose, happy, sits down on a chair and takes off the shoes that are pinching her feet.

ROSE (V.O) – INTERCUT
It’s funny...when a son is a boy, you only dream. This is common to all parents: “how is going to be when he grow-up?”, you try to mold his life with advices and teachings, giving directions to reach that dream... and in the end, what remains is a life you have to accept to not be excluded, this is the bitter taste of a dream’s frustration...

ROSE
I went to the bedroom, but you weren’t there, I thought you would be here.

JOSH
I had to leave, the cleaners were going to clean the bedroom, so I took an advantage and came to eat something. Are you okay?...You seem worried.

ROSE
I went to your apartment yesterday and I found this letter, I think it’s important, I saw the bank’s design on it.

Rose cleans the envelope and gives it to Josh, he opens the envelope and reads the letter.

JOSH
It’s a bank invoice, asking for my attendance to resolv a problem that regards to the mortgage...

ROSE
Resolv? You want to say pay it ...right?

JOSH
I won’t pay the mortgage, Rose...I got to add the money I have with the amount my brother lent me and pay the hospital expenses.

ROSE
Son, but how is going to be later? Where are you going to live? And if Brian recuperates? How is going to be? Why don’t you sell a picture?

JOSH
I can’t do this! Brian always took care of his pictures with so much affection...he loved that pictures...I won’t betray the trust he has in me...

ROSE
We don’t have choice, son...

JOSH
In the truth we have, yes we have...the doctor talked to me and he indirectly told me he can’t hold up the overdues anymore, and all that things...

ROSE
He wants to transfer Brian to... a public hospital.

JOSH
Rose, give me some credit, I would never allow this, I’m considering to take him home...what do you think?

ROSE
An absurd, here it seems so difficult to take care of him, for how long you’re not going to the office...four or five weeks, the mortgage is expired...how do you intend to take care of him? Of course I can help...but I won’t always be there...it’s a risk.

JOSH
Yeah, you’re right, and besides, I have the feeling that if I take him home I’ll loose him...everyday I arrive here and think how good it could be if he were awoke, I even dream with it...ah...I don’t know...Rose, what can I do?

They both become silent, resigned with the situation, until Josh get up, take the tray with the rest of the food, go to the garbage and pour the tray’s contents; visibly nervous, he leaves the tray on the balcony, walks to the coffee machine and buys two cups of coffee; observed by Rose, he goes back to the table.

ROSE (V.O)
I know he’s frustrated, this is a common feeling, my God...and think about how much he has done...how he sacrified himself...and the worst...how much he has suffered.

Josh gives Rose the coffee, with the hand trembling, she takes the coffee and holds his hand...

JOSH
Drink the coffee...it’s awful, but it keeps us awoke...

ROSE
Yeah...you’re right...Josh, pay attention, I’ll approve any decision you make...I’ll always be with you.

Josh smiles and hugs Rose, sits down at the table and drinks the coffee.

Yes, he was so well, you had just moved, what a mess!...I remember because a splinter of wood entered in my finger...

JOSH
Really!...all things were messy, and it was dark because Brian, confused, forgot to buy bulbs...do you remember...what an absurd!?...

Okay, I’ll make the wish, but without speech later, okay?...Let me see...I know! I want everybody to stop asking me to make a wish...

A loud booing is heard...so he sits down again, puts the wine glass on the ground, closes his eyes and blows up the cake candles; everybody applaud and he hears his cell phone ringing...he smiles, stands up and answers the phone, turning away with his back to the guests, that, curious, follow him; when he notices and looks back.

BRIAN
My wish is already granted...that’s Clara.
Everybody smiles and he goes to the veranda, because the reach of the phone sign isn’t so good; Rose looks at him with disapproval and, visibly indignant, goes to Josh.

ROSE
This girl...does she talk a lot with him? Have they been meeting each other lately?

JOSH
No, I think they haven’t, and what I know is that she’s in a hospital...

ROSE
Is she ill?

JOSH
I think it has to be with poisoning...I don’t know well.

ROSE
Drugs...and I wonder why she doesn’t surprise me anymore....

JOSH
Forget it...this is between them...who wants more wine?

ROSE
There’s nothing...between them, she never were part of our family...

Josh goes out from the living room to take more wine, and Brian hangs up the phone, coming back to the living room; Rose doesn’t resist to her thrust and approaches to Brian.
ROSE
How is she going?

BRIAN
Are you talking about Clara? She’s well...passing through a difficult moment, but she’s overcoming it...she’s strong.

ROSE
This girl is always in trouble...

BRIAN
And so are you, aren’t you?...My God...now I really became sad, she said she’ll got to leave the town for a time, without any reason, she not even let me say goodbye...

ROSE
And, what’s the problem? Let her go...look, son, it’s not that I don’t like her, but the influence she has in your life is simply irritant. She always wants to be near you...

BRIAN
What a hell did Clara do to you, to you treat her like this, Mrs. Rose?

ROSE
Someday I tell you...but not today; today you’re mine and don’t think you’ll escape...
Brian, ashamed, tries to escape, but Rose catches his arm.

BRIAN
No, mom...please, don’t think about it...
ROSE
You won’t do it with your mom, will you?

Rose signals to Josh and he puts a CD to play, and soon the music takes place and Rose calls Brian.

BRIAN
This is a plot, right? Okay, okay, I’m going.

Shy, he goes and meets his mother, and they dance, observed by Josh and the guests.

CUT FOR

INSIDE THE HOSPITAL – SNACK BAR – PRESENT

Rose and Josh, sat at the table, smile at the shared memory, Rose with her eyes full of tears, disguises the feeling with a melancholy smile.

ROSE
I still have that CD...Paul loved that music.

JOSH
If you want...I can dance with you...

ROSE
Thank you, my dear...but it couldn’t be the same thing...
JOSH
I know...

ROSE
Did you know that?...I went to the clinic where Clara said she was in, but...she lied, she never were there...

JOSH
Why did you go there?

ROSE
To charge a promise she made...

JOSH
You and your intolerance...this won’t bring good things to you...let’s go to the bedroom, I have some things to get there.

They stand up and leave.

FADE IN

OUTSIDE THE CEMETERY – LUCK’S FUNERAL – PRESENT
Clara is standing, remote and alone she takes pictures, observing the two gravediggers take down Luck’s coffin in the grave, and there’s only a lady attending the funeral.

CLARA (V.O)
My God...Luck is dead, and with him a part of me is gone, a life I have to bury here...with him. I don’t know, I think death is my “great fella”; all people with whom I care, I worry about and love, are or will be dead...

My loneliness now is crystal-clear and opressive, I don’t feel like this for a long time, real long time...nothing in the world can make me feel more void...maybe this is the price I have to pay for some debt I got, for they who I hurt, and they aren’t a few people...I must admit...
God, why do I have to bury all they? All...even the man I thought that cared about me is dead, stretch out in a hut in a “world’s end”...scoundrel.
As always I’m back to the beggining...like a vicious that doesn’t never have an end...never; all turns back to Brian...as always, Brian; so, for me, for you and for him...don’t die...

CUT FOR

INSIDE CLARA’S APARTMENT – BEDROOM – PAST

Brian and Clara watch TV, lying on bed, drinking the last dose of tequila’s bottles, that are covering the bedroom ground.

CLARA
Tell me a thing...have you ever slept with a woman?

BRIAN
No, did you?
CLARA
Foolish...

BRIAN
Ah...are you trying to convince me you never were curious to know how it is?

CLARA
Stop this...and besides, I asked you first...have you ever...had sex with a woman?

BRIAN
Not yet...why? Is it a proposal?

CLARA
It may be...it can be...

BRIAN
Don’t propose it to me, if you don’t have enough courage to do it...

CLARA
Don’t you have curiosity...to know if you like it?

BRIAN
It doesn’t have to be ...with to like or not...the problem is fail to do it...

CLARA
You’re so kind...

BRIAN
And you’re so drunk...

Clara approaches to Brian, passes her fingers on Brian’s lips, takes off her T-shirt and kisses Brian, he becomes frightened, she unbuttons his shirt, leans her nose against his chest, smelling his body’s scent, he passes his hand on her hair; Clara raises her skirt and climbs upon Brian, he tries to get out, but she prevents him from doing it; Clara kisses Brian again, that tries to get away from the kiss, but she persists on kissing, and it becomes more intense, she licks Brian’s neck, breaths near his ear and asks, whispering,

CLARA
Are you liking this?

BRIAN
What are we doing? This is madness...

CLARA
You’re excited...

BRIAN
I am...And?...

CLARA
So let it happen...please...

BRIAN
And if nothing change...how will you feel?

CLARA
I’ll have the memory of your taste, your scent.

So Clara opens the fly of Brian’s panths, she’s penetrated and the camera closes on Clara’s face, and she moves with pleasure, Brian hugs her, brings her face near him, kissing her, so he alteres the position, staying upon her; the camera approaches, the hands of both them looks for and finds each other, and they entwine their hands.

CUT FOR

INSIDE CLARA’S APARTMENT – BEDROOM – PAST

Brian wakes up with the daylight entering in the room, he sees himself embraced with Clara, and affectionately he hugs her and she kisses him, he smiles and gives her another kiss on her forehead, and then she squeezes her face against his chest, as if she doesn’t want to release him never more.

PAUSE

Brian breaks the silence.

BRIAN
And now, what will we do?

CLARA
You’re who you are, little strawberry, I can’t change this...only you can.

BRIAN
Is it okay to you...without resentment?

CLARA
Resentment? Why? I have the memories of what happened...

BRIAN
Ditto...

CLARA
All times I feel alone, I’ll remember of how I’m feeling this morning, and how was to be with you, on this bed, inside me...

Clara kisses Brian again, embraces him affectionately and gets up wrapped in the sheets; she walks to the bathroom, along the untidy bedroom are the clothings on the ground...

BATHROOM

Suddenly she feels a strong sick and begins to throw up.

BRIAN
My God, I am who doesn’t like sex in this way and... you are who becomes sick...I’m feeling flattered.

CLARA
A lot of tequila...

BRIAN
Yeah, you’re right...I drank a lot too, I’ll make some coffee and call Josh, ah...I’m sorry, I...

CLARA
Don’t be foolish...and please, we don’t have to make it become a problem...Did you change your mind?

BRIAN
I don’t think so...

CLARA
Neither I...go and call him. To talk the truth I think he’s worried about you...

Clara looks through the mirror and sees Brian moving away, and she has to weep, so she closes the bathroom’s door.

Did you know the lad?

CLARA
Oh, yes...I knew him.

My name is Sarah, I’m mother of a lad’s friend.

CLARA
Are you Caze’s mother?

LADY
Do you know my son?

CLARA
Only by his name...Luck always talked about him...

LADY
He was a good lad, he used to take out the garbage everyday...I’ll miss him...

CLARA
I got to go...will you stay?

LADY
I’ll stay a little more.

Clara moves away, letting the woman backwards.

CLARA (V.O)
It’s funny how things so small can make someone’s memory so strong, and important things are forgotten with time...I can’t remember his face...I can’t remember my son’s face.

JOSH
What?...Are you crazy?...Will you leave me in the house of someone I hardly know...no, I’m going with you...

BRIAN
Josh, where I’m going I should go alone and besides, I want you to know each other, you’re two of the three people I love more in my life; my mother and Clara can’t stay in a same place, God knows why, but you...you don’t have any reason to this avoidance.

Clara comes to the living room with two glasses of water in her hands.

BRIAN
Clara, I want to let Josh here with you, because he knows none in this town, and I didn’t want to leave him alone in the hotel, at worst, he can resolv to take for a walk in town and become lost; I have an appointment in the centre, I’ll delay about two hours, is that okay?

CLARA
Okay...certainly.

JOSH
It’s because he thinks I’m an idiot...did you hear it Clara? I can become lost...(IRONIC)

Script part III

FADE IN

INSIDE CLARA’S APARTMENT – PRESENT

Clara is sat at the window and she’s observing the street’s bustle with the cat on her lap, making caress on its fur.
CLARA
You know Jasmin, I’m very anxious...I want so much to see him that hurts...

Clara puts the cat’s snout against her nose, kissing the cat, when she hears the doorbell ringing; she puts the cat on the ground and runs to the door, she looks through the peep-hole , starts to jump for joy and opens the door, smiling; outside there are a lady (Judy) and a 5-year-old boy, Clara’s son (Brian), she opens her arms and the boy runs towards her; the lady closes the door, while they are hugging each other.

CLARA
My God...I had forgotten how you are, boy...

She kisses and hugs him, truthfully suffocating him, and he, trying to escape runs along the house.

JUDY
What’s this on your face?

CLARA
I bumped my face...

Into a scoundrel’s wrist...

CLARA
Yeah, but it’s past...how strong, handsome he really is!

JUDY
He’s strong and his organism is accepting the treatment.

CLARA
He still is very young...

JUDY
Yes, and he’s a gentle boy, but he needs to be more with you...

CLARA
I know that...maybe things will change...some things that scared me led me to evaluate my belief...I think the life I was living is over.

JUDY
To renovate the spirit is, without any doubts, a great step to new attempts...I’m happy to know about this.

CLARA
That’s it!...Are you going to stay?

JUDY
I can’t...Joe is terrible and when he’s alone he becomes worse...I’ll be back on Sunday at night, if...you still need me.

CLARA
Brian...come to kiss Aunt Judy...
Brian comes running to meet Judy and he hugs the lady and later he goes back to pursue the cat; the lady says goodbye to Clara, in turn, opens the door and the lady goes out, but before leaving the lady turns back to talk to Clara.

JUDY
I can help you with his treatment, to keep you company, to try to supply some emotional necessities, but not to take your place...

CLARA
I understand, Judy...and I’m grateful for your preoccupation...

JUDY
If you need me, call me on Sunday, okay?

CLARA
Okay, thank you...

The lady leaves, and Clara closes the door and begins to look for her boy along he house.

CLARA
Where are you?...

POV BRIAN

From under the bed he sees his mother looking for him, Clara approaches and he sees her feet near the bed, he burst into laughter, because he can’t hold it, and he tries to hold it with his hands.
THE SCENE COMES BACK

CLARA
I’m hearing you...

Clara hears the boy’s laughter and raises the mattress and pulls him from under the bed by his feet, she jumps upon him and holds him, rolling on the ground; the boy tickles Clara and runs towards the living room; following Brian, she stumbles on a chair and falls on the sofa, the boy jumps upon her, when someone rings the door bell; they stop to play and the boy starts to laugh, and so do Clara.

CLARA
Who is it?...

The door bell rings again, but no one answers, so Clara gets up of the sofa with Brian on lap, and she walks to the door, looks through the peep-hole, but the person is on his back and Clara can’t see who’s at the door, so she passes the chain bolt in the door, opening a gap in the door, and Josh is outside.

JOSH
Hi, do you remember me?

CLARA
Of course I do Josh...how are you?

JOSH
May I...come in?

CLARA
Oh, I’m sorry, of course you may...come in please...

Clara takes off the chain bolt of the door and Josh comes in. Clara closes the door.

JOSH
Hi!...Who’s the boy?

CLARA
Oh, he’s my son...

JOSH
I didn’t know you had a boy...what’s his name?

CLARA
His name’s Brian...

JOSH
How are you Brian? My name is Josh, I’m friend of...a friend of your mother.

The boy agrees with his head.

CLARA
Did something happened?...How’s Brian?

JOSH
I came to talk to you about it...

Clara puts the kid on the ground.

CLARA
Son, go look for Jasmin to your mom...

BRIAN
Mom, do you have any sweets?

CLARA
Yes, mom has sweets inside the drawer of the nightstand, kid...you can catch it.

The boy runs out leaving Josh and Clara alone. Clara asks him to sit down.

CLARA
So Josh, tell me...what exactly happened? Is he well?

JOSH
His clinical situation is the same...I’m already resigned to it...

CLARA
What are you saying? You must have faith...

JOSH
What happens is that in some circumstances only faith isn’t enough. That’s why I’m here...

CLARA
You can say...what you have need of, I’m here to help you.

JOSH
Clara, I need money... a loan...because the expenses of the hospital this month is expired, the health insurance doesn’t cover Brian’s debts with the hospital no more, and the institution that helps us is without resources; I don’t have no one else to run to...I was thinking about sell Brian’s pictures, but I didn’t find a buyer...if you’re able to help me...I have an amount, but it isn’t enough.

CLARA
How much do you need?

JOSH
At least US$ 3.000,00.... I know it’s too much, maybe you can’t help...I know it’s unfair, but I need it very much...

CLARA
Give me a break...I think I can get it...

JOSH
Look...you don’t need to...do nothing if you don’t have the money, I try to find with someone else...I don’t want to put you into some trouble...

CLARA
Don’t be foolish, I only have to check how much money I have, if I have this amount available in the bank...

The boy comes to the living room and begins to play where Josh is sat; suddenly the boy stares at Josh, that looks back at the boy, and Josh notices that the boy takes after Brian.

JOSH
Clara, it sounds funny, but your kid has the same look than Brian, when he’s in this way...my God, he’s Brian’s...

CLARA
He is my son...Josh, let’s make things easier to our lives.

JOSH
He’s Brian’s...son...Good heavens Clara!, that’s why you disappeared all that time, and Rose couldn’t find you...

CLARA
This isn’t important right now.

JOSH
How come? Isn’t it important?...Certainly it is!...

The boy stops to play and as if he had felt something, he screams and runs to the bathroom; Clara, frightened, follows him, and Josh’s cell phone rings, and he answers.

JOSH
Hello...

ROSE (V.O)
Josh, this is me, Rose...he got worse, he stopped breathing...

JOSH
Rose, is that you? Rose...what happened, Rose?

ROSE (V.O)
He was probed...and they’re preparing to take him to the ITC (Intensive Therapy Centre)...I think he is going...

JOSH
What do you mean, Rose? ITC, what happened?

BRIAN
Hi...everything’s okay?...

THE BOY
Yeah...

BRIAN
I’m a friend of your mother...

THE BOY
I know...I saw a picture of you, in mom’s bedroom...

BRIAN
Yes...she likes a lot of photographs...

THE BOY
Yes, she likes...

BRIAN
Aunt Judy told me you’re...sick, is it true?

THE BOY
Yes, it is...

BRIAN
And is it the reason you live here?

THE BOY
I think so...and because my mother works a lot...but I meet her on Saturdays, she...let me sleep there sometimes...it’s very nice...she has a cat, Jasmin...

BRIAN
Yes...Jasmin, its fur smells good...

Brian sits down on the ground beside the boy.

BRIAN
Do you know your father?

THE BOY
No, I don’t...

BRIAN
Would you like to know him?

THE BOY
I think I would, but...I think he works a lot too...

BRIAN
I...can come here now and then...and you can tell your friends I’m your father...
THE BOY
Why?...

BRIAN
When I was a child like you, in elementary school the older boys used to beat the youngers, because these boys were silly; but the youngers boys’parents began to teach their children to stand up against the older boys...and then these boys became scared...

THE BOY
Will you teach me how to protect myself?...

BRIAN
Yes, if you want me to...

THE BOY
But...and when you’re not here?

BRIAN
Well...then you show them this, and you say your dad is coming soon...

Brian takes from his pocket a necklace with a pendant, in which is the picture of Brian and Clara, and Brian gives it to the boy; the signal to snack-time is rung and the boy runs out...but he stops, and in the middle of the way he begins to come back.

THE BOY
Are you my dad?

BRIAN
Yeah, I guess so...

The boy hugs Brian, that can’t hold his feeling inside, and Judy approaches to they; the boy sees a tumour on Brian’s neck, and he compares it with the one on his own arm.

THE BOY
I have a spot here...just like yours here...

BRIAN
I know...forgive me for this...

JUDY
Dear, you had better hurry, the boys are already in the canteen.

The boy runs out leaving Judy and Brian alone.

BRIAN
Thank you for let me see him...

JUDY
I couldn’t deny it to you; I only ask you to tell nothing to Clara, if she didn’t tell you about the boy...she must have her reasons.

BRIAN
Yes, I know...how is his treatment going?

JUDY
He’s a strong boy, the medicine inhibits the illness progress; he has to fight a lot...just as you.

BRIAN
To fight...it’s the only thing I’ve been doing in my entire life, I’m tired...very tired...

I’ll see if the manager can help you...wait a minute, please.

The young woman goes to the office and brings the manager up to the balcony.

MANAGER
Good afternoon...what can I do for you?

JOSH
A relative of mine is in the hospital of Chicago, very sick and I need to arrive there as fast as possible.

MANAGER
It’s happening a convention in Chicago and all the flights are sold up...the only thing I can do for you, right now, is to put you on the top of the waiting line, and if someone give up, you can travel in his place...I’m really sorry.

JOSH
I’m grateful...

Josh moves away from the balcony and sits down on a waiting armchair opposite the stand, he puts his hand in his pocket and finds the paper with Clara’s phone number and adress, he takes the cell phone, dials and waits her to answer it.

CLARA
I understand...did you arrive at the airport yet?

JOSH (V.O)
I did...but there’s no avaiable flight to Chicago, I’m depending of a waiting line, and of the good-willing of the company’s manager.

CLARA
The manager...is he a tall, grey-haired guy, who wears moustache?

JOSH (V.O)
Yes, ...he is, do you know him?

CLARA
Yes...look, Josh, all these things made me shocked, and I forgot to tell you that I have the money, you tell me your current account number and I’ll deposit it just now.
JOSH (V.O)
Thanks a lot Clara...but I can’t accept the money, because I know this will mean a great upset for you and your boy, and also because I didn’t had courage to call you to come with me...the truth is that I was a coward.

CLARA
This is silliness...I can look after ourselves very well, and with tranquility.

JOSH (V.O)
Clara, the cell battery is low, I call you from the hospital...

CLARA
Okay...good luck!

Clara hangs up the phone and looks at the boy sat on the sofa, and as if she’s comprehending his wish in his eyes, she smiles.

ROSE
Is he going to die?

DOCTOR
It’s a matter of hours...I’m really sorry Rose.

DOCTOR
Rose...Paul, as I told you before on the phone, the results proved: Rose is pregnant.

Rose becomes happy, overjoyed, however, Paul can’t hide his worry.
PAUL
And how about our problem...Phil?

DOCTOR
It’s very early to say anything, it would be hasty to presume something; without any doubts, the illness is hereditary, but it doesn’t mean that the baby will be attacked by it...

PAUL
And if it attack him?...It isn’t the time to talk about uncertainties...I got to know...

DOCTOR
It’s impossible to be sure right now...this happens in all cases of this illness...

ROSE
And if he won’t be attacked, Paul?! We got to try...

PAUL
The risk is big, and I don’t know if I’m disposed to condemn the baby to a life full of hardship and sacrifices...think about it, Rose...

ROSE
Are you sure you’re only thinking about the baby?

PAUSE

DOCTOR
Your worry is rightful, Paul, this illness is new and resistant, but isn’t sure that the baby will develop it; what worries is the consequences for Rose; I think you should better talk alone before decide what you’re going to do...

The doctor leaves the surgery room, and Rose and Paul stay alone.

ROSE
I’ll make things easier to you, Paul... I’m the bearer of the disease, I am the risk, so I assume the responsibility.

PAUL
You’re precipitating the decision, Rose...

ROSE
I want this baby, Paul.

PAUL
And with this you can be condemning this child.

JOSH (V.O)
I know I’m not the one you wanted to be here, holding your hand, but before she come, I want to say goodbye to you; I simply adore you, you’ve been my life since the first moment I put my eyes on you, and now I know that, in which was possible you loved me too, on your way; I just would like you to love me as you love Clara, I only can’t understand why you never assumed this love...it would have been bigger than all the problems, your silly, she loves you so much too; thinking over, I’m lucky, because I had you by my side, and she always kept the scraps you offered; and thinking about the beautiful child you both have, you would have been a wonderful family, and however much I would love you, I never would be able to give you this. Why?...why you have to go now? She finally is ready to say how much she loves you, and my love is bigger enough to deprive you of this love...therefore I’ll give you a last kiss and leave you with the one who’s worthy of you in this or in any other life.

Josh stands up, puts Brian’s hand upon the bed, kisses him and goes out from the bedroom.

BRIAN
That’s why mom likes so much of photography.

CLARA
Honey, why don’t you lean on the bench?...

ROSE
I knew you paid the hospital expenses...I’m very grateful...I want you to tell me how much you spent and I’ll pay you back.

CLARA
Forget it...I saved an amount to occasions like these...

ROSE
Do you still keep your money in the flusing box?

CLARA
Did you know that?

ROSE
There’s just a little I don’t know about you, and what I don’t know...I can guess...

Rose says it looking at Brian on the back bench.

ROSE
You don’t need to stay in the hotel...you’re welcome in my house...

CLARA
I don’t want to bother you...

ROSE
You’re not going to bother me...

The car passes in front of a photographic studio, and Clara persists in looking at a plate that’s offering a job.

CLARA
Stop the car...Rose.

ROSE
Why?...Did I do something wrong?

CLARA
No, you didn’t...it’s because I’m going to change my life.

ROSE
Right now?

CLARA
And is there a better moment than ‘right now’?

Smiling, Rose answers...

ROSE
No...I think there isn’t.

CLARA
Do you still live at the same place?

ROSE
Yes, I do.

CLARA
So take Brian with you, he must be tired.

ROSE
But what about you?

Well...the salary is medium too, I think I’ll risk myself with you...what’s your name?

CLARA (V.O)
Life has its loss, and we have to resign ourselves to it, but the best thing is that, for the first time, I can catch sight of the big show contained in life, and it seems to me that the lights of my big show are switching on from now on; yes...it’s better late than never.
